Brittany took pride in the fact that she was able to help younger kids get through...

Eighteen year old Brittany is a bright, young woman who is always willing to share her story and answer questions about her experiences with spina bifida. Although spina bifida means she has some difficulty walking, Brittany is quick to point out the fact that she can do things that others cannot. Brittany has had sixteen surgeries overall; her most recent being a shunt revision on September 1st, 2010.

Brittany and her mom, Cheri, originally heard about Spina Bifida of Jacksonville (SBJ) through Nemours & Donna Zerra. They were excited to get help from the organization, to be around other people who faced the same obstacles. Brittany says that SBJ has been extremely informative and accommodating, especially when dealing with such a challenging condition. The staff at SBJ has helped tremendously.  Brittany says that if it wasn’t for Maria Quinones and Donna Zerra, she may not have addressed a shunt malfunction as quickly as she did.

Brittany has also enjoyed events provided by SBJ. One of her favorites is camp. Being a little older, Brittany took pride in the fact that she was able to help younger kids get through some of the same obstacles she has faced. Brittany feels SBJ is a group where she fits in,  “I’ll never be able to tell you how much I’ve appreciated the help we get and friends I’ve made through the organization.”
